Both streams qualify successful candidates to further commence and attempt the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan fellowship examinations.

The total duration of a training program is of four years. The fellows shall rotate in other specialties according to the CPSP curriculum. The rotations stipulated by CPSP are:

  • Three (03) months in Thoracic surgery.

Those candidates who have completed up to three months registrar ship or equivalent in a recognized thoracic unit prior to the start of the training program are to be exempted from three months rotation.

In addition to these rotations, the fellows will rotate in pediatric cardiac surgery which will be considered as off-campus rotation to gain experience in pediatric cardiac surgery. The content of individual years of the training period should reflect the seniority of the trainee and should provide progressive training in all aspects of cardiac surgical practice. The setting and achieving of targets should be discussed and set between the individual fellows and his or her supervisor. Targets should be realistic and should cover all aspects of cardiac surgical practices.
