Irrational Use Of Antibiotics And Role Of The Pharmacist

Antibiotic resistance is one of the major public health problems world-wide. Resistance is threatening those treatments that depend on antibiotic therapy as well as the treatment of infection itself.

This is particularly important because 80 per cent of antibiotics are prescribed in primary care. Like in throat pain, common cold and flu, acute otitis media (minor ear infection), acute infective conjunctivitis (eye infection) , acute bronchitis and acute sinusitis are the most common infections presenting in primary care, like antibiotics are not good to prescribed for diarrhea. Antibiotics use in these conditions has limited value, and can cause adverse effects, increased consultations, high cost and an increased risk of resistance.

The role of Pharmacist to stop the irrational use of antibiotics:

After realizing that antibiotic resistance is indeed a serious problem for which interventions are required especially to change behavior, many suggestions were put forth. The action plan suggested and followed by pharmacists was the following:
